Club History

Whitford Amateur Football Club was formed in June 1975 at a meeting held at 45 Goyner Way, Padbury.

As a result of this meeting an application was forwarded to the Western Australian Amateur Football League (WAAFL) dated 7 July 1975 requesting 3 teams be admitted for the 1976 season.

Whitford Amateur Football Club was named after the area or district in which the club was to be located and formed.

Although not a suburb, Whitford or sometimes Whitfords (the name being interchangeable) took its name from the Whitford Satellite City Development which was built in the 1970’s and was later split into the suburbs of Padbury, Hillarys, Kallaroo and Craigie, all of which share the same postcode.

The Whitford Amateur Football Club was formed to encourage and foster the game of Australian Rules Football within the Whitford and surrounding districts.

The club was originally based out of Otago Reserve in Craigie and the club colours were and remain Royal Blue & White.

The emblem or logo that was adopted was the gull, which was widely used in the Whitford land release advertising for the area.

Membership for the first year was set at $10 for playing, $5 for social and $2 match fees. The first training session held 16 February 1976.

First official scratch match was played against Scarborough at Millington Reserve 17 March 1976.

24 April the clubs first official matches were played against university (league) and Innaloo (reserves) with the reserves recording the clubs first win 9.11: 65 to 8.14: 62.

The club relocated to MacDonald Reserve in 1979 and in 1984 the logo was changed from the Gull to the Warrior, which is still in place today.

After 6 attempts (5 by the league team) the club achieved its first premiership with the reserves in 1985. The league followed in 1986 winning the C Grade pennant.
